Breakfast on the Farm
The Dairy Foundation began hosting an annual Breakfast on the Farm in June of 2010, with a purpose of educating consumers about the wholesomeness of dairy while eating a great breakfast. The family-oriented event includes a tour of the 250-cow dairy farm at the Dairy Center, a farm animal petting zoo, and interactive activities with NICC Dairy Science Club members.
Many local and regional organizations work together to make this event a reality, including the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation, Midwest Dairy Association, area dairy promotional groups, the Iowa Egg Council, Northeast Iowa Community College, Iowa Pork Producers, Iowa State University, Iowa dairy processors, and local 4-H clubs and FFA chapters.
The Dairy Center opened in 2000 and was created with the purpose enhancing the dairy industry by providing education, demonstration and research.
About 120 students use The Dairy Center while attending NICC classes for dairy science and other agriculture majors. “It’s very important to educate not only students, but also consumers. American farmers are providing consumers with more and better quality food than ever before. In fact, one farmer now supplies food for more than 144 people in the United States and abroad compared with just 25.8 people in 1960 and on less land every year” says Megan Kregel, Dairy Center Coordinator. “That is one of the big reasons for having Breakfast on the Farm and why we started planning it.”
The breakfast is held annually every June, look at our calendar of events to see when it is and make plans to attend!
